Alaska Experience

July 28, 2024 —August 09, 2024

Alaska has a long history of human exploration and exploitation, which creates ongoing conflicts based on scientific findings that may conflict with policies and practices adopted by government and industry. From threats to major fisheries, the lingering effects of the Exxon Valdez accident, and the accelerating changes associated with a warming climate, there are numerous opportunities to see the impacts first-hand and consider more sustainable options for future growth and development. The expansiveness of the 49th state and its multi-cultural history also present a unique opportunity to understand the difficulties of providing quality health care to a highly diverse population.

When Science and Society Collide: Case Studies from Alaska
Course Description: This class introduces students to historical and current conflicts in Alaska related to energy exploration, climate change, health care, and economic development -- and the role of science in informing decision-making. Discover the rich history of Alaskan cultures and the challenges for meeting societal needs in a sustainable manner. Ecological changes will be examined through field trips to glaciers in retreat, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, salmon fisheries, the protected wilderness of Denali National Park, and earthquake sites. Students will gain insights into sustainable options for future growth and development and explore issues related to health care delivery to native Alaskan populations.
Prerequisite: Any introductory college biology, environmental science or geology course or consent of instructor. (add Pre-admission meeting) Students intending to enroll in this course are expected to meet with the instructor prior to the CCSA deadline for full refunds (https://ccsa.cc/cancellation.php) to ensure they understand the physical requirements of the course and the rigors of wilderness camping. Zoom meetings can be arranged for students unable to meet at Northern Kentucky University.
