WKU Course:
BIOL 485 or GEOL 475

Discipline(s):
Biology , Ecology , Geology

Course Description:

Discover Australia's ecology and geology from the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest lowland rainforest in the world, to the Great Barrier Reef, a World Heritage Site. Study geological features, volcanoes, and diverse ecosystems—marine, freshwater, and tropical rainforest. Use simple sampling methods to understand how the geological activity impacts the ecology of these varied ecosystems and the evolution of Australia’s unique organisms. Gain a practical understanding of Australia's natural habitats and deepen your knowledge of ecology and geology.

Prerequisites:

One year of college coursework, including completing a basic writing course and at least one science course.

Open to students of all majors; may fulfill a science requirement.

Physical Activity Requirements:

Each day, participants walk 3-5 miles, hiking on maintained paths as well as uneven terrain, outside in all weather. Participants swim and snorkel to explore ecosystems.

Course Highlights:
  • Analyze the dynamic relationship between geology and ecology through firsthand observation, such as volcanic activity and its ecological aftermath.
  • Conduct cutting-edge geological and ecological scientific sampling
  • Witness the unfolding of geological history in real-time.
  • Embark on an exhilarating exploration of mangroves and rainforests.
  • Snorkel the largest barrier reef in the world.
