I am a Professor in the Department of English at EKU, and I specialize in teaching students how to be more sophisticated readers, writers, and researchers. I am so excited about this trip to London because I love seeing how literature comes together with history, art, music, politics, philosophy, and even the physical spaces we live in to help us make sense of being human.

Course Description:

Step into the gripping world of British and Irish dystopian literature, where exaggerated tales of suffering, injustice, and disaster reveal hard truths about society. Through novels like V for Vendetta, Children of Men, and Never Let Me Go, we’ll tackle pressing topics such as surveillance, scientific ethics, and cultural anxiety surrounding immigration. But it won’t just be reading—we’ll explore the real-life locations from these stories, visiting iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, Ludgate Circus, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
By connecting these settings with their historical backgrounds, you’ll better understand the social movements that shaped the literature. Plus, we’ll dive into contemporary art scenes of London and Dublin to discover how modern artists depict dystopian futures and reflect on today’s cultural challenges. This immersive experience promises to be both intellectually stimulating and creatively inspiring.
