ENVIRONMENT AL HEALTH SCIENCE
A World Traveler’s Course On Illness & Injury Prevention
Most of us are at least somewhat fearful of overseas travel and especially travel to exotic places like Africa. Gain a realistic understanding of the threats faced in exotic overseas travel, and in particular to South Africa. Aided by local experts from such organizations as the Ministry of Public Health in South Africa, we will dispel false threats and provide firsthand, clear and concise information that will provide a level of confidence when traveling abroad that most people can only wish for. Retired Captain Dan Harper, previously with the Centers for Disease Control for 26 years, will lead the class to a variety of recreational settings where students can observe disease and hazard threats and prevention.

GEOLOGY /GEOGRAPHY
Gold & Diamonds
Nearly half of all of the gold and most of the diamonds ever extracted from the Earth have come from South Africa—all within the past one hundred and fifty years! This introductory geology course will investigate the nature and origin of these two resources, as well as how their geology has profoundly impacted world history, global economies, the environment and the people who inhabit these lands. There has been no place on Earth where these two simple stones have shaped a nation and a region like they have South Africa.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY- Moved to Summer 2011
Occupation in Context
This class has been moved to the South Africa Summer 2011 Program for logistical reasons.
The need to educate people to be involved with a global knowledge-based society, while maintaining appreciation and respect for difference, has never been stronger. Many of the western models of occupational therapy practice adopted by South African educators and practitioners may not have relevance, given the unique cultural context of their people. Ubuntu, an African philosophy that focuses on people’s allegiances and relations with each other, is in contrast to western philosophies that often place greater emphasis on autonomy. Through readings, lectures, field trips and interactions with local people, we will explore how occupational therapy is defined and practiced in South Africa.
