London/Dublin

Experience the holiday season in two of the most exciting cities in the British Isles, seeing them through the lens of courses crafted to take advantage of these wonderful learning environments. Join the CCSA London/Dublin Program, scheduled for December 26 through January 8, to investigate the worlds not just of Dickens and Joyce but two vibrant centers of commerce, culture, and the arts. As part of itineraries matched to specific courses listed, two day-trips, one in England and one in Ireland, are also planned. Previous years’ destinations have included sites such as Bath & Stonehenge, Canterbury & Dover and Stratford & Warwick in England; and Glendalough & Wicklow County in Ireland. A ticket for one theatrical production is also included for each course.

By combining this intensive study abroad experience with course-specific directed study activities preceding and/or following the travel portion of the program, students may earn three semester hours of college credit.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

Participants in the London/Dublin Program reside in area hotels. Accommodations are based primarily on double occupancy with occasional use of multi-bedded rooms; single rooms may be available at an additional price.

Daily breakfasts are included in the program price.

PROGRAM COSTS

For those making their own flight arrangements, the price of the London/Dublin Program is $3095. This includes internal air transportation between London and Dublin, accommodations, daily breakfast, local transport passes, program excursions, play(s), health insurance and some additional meals. Please note in making trans-atlantic transportation arrangements: the in-country portion of the London/Dublin Program begins in London on December 27 and ends in Dublin on January 8. Participants arranging their own air transportation must contact the CCSA central office before initiating travel arrangements and must file a copy of their flight itinerary with the office after reservations have been made. Please note that airport transfers to and from the accommodation site are provided ONLY to those participants for whom CCSA has arranged air travel.

For those traveling on a flight arranged by CCSA, the price of the London Winter Program is $3895. This includes round-trip transportation from designated cities, internal air transportation, airport transfers, accommodations, daily breakfast, local transport passes, program excursions, play(s), health insurance and some additional meals.

Most meals, other than breakfast, are at the participant’s own expense. A minimum of $600 should be budgeted for meals, additional transportation, entrance fees and departure tax (if applicable). Participants should also budget additional funds for personal expenses such as souvenirs and independent travel, based upon their individual spending habits.

All prices are subject to change in the event of unanticipated increases in airfares, monetary exchange rates or other changes in program costs. In some cases, program items may be deleted in lieu of a price increase.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE & DEADLINES

Applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of the September 30, 2011 application deadline, as priority is given to early applications. Notification regarding acceptance to the program will be sent shortly after receipt of the application and deposit in the CCSA central office.

For students from outside the CCSA consortium, notification will follow receipt of the application, deposit and additional application materials as specified on page 14. Confirmation of specific course selection will be provided approximately three weeks after the application deadline.

NOTE: A $100 reduction in the program price will be awarded to those who submit their applications before or on September 16, 2011. This discount will be applied to the final payment due on November 4, 2011.

A $200 deposit is due at the time of application.
A first payment of $1600 to cover the airline ticket price and deposits on arrangements in London and Dublin is due by the application deadline date, September 30, 2011.
The second and final payment of $2095 with airfare, $1295 without airfare, plus single room price (if applicable), is due by November 4, 2011.

Checks should be made payable to “CCSA.” Please consider your cancelled check as receipt for payment. Returned checks will incur a $20 penalty fee. CCSA also accepts Visa and MasterCard.

The following are descriptions of the courses of study offered for this CCSA program. Applicants may register for courses offered by professors from any member institution. Students are encouraged to e-mail faculty to learn more about the classes.

BIOLOGY

Brewery Science: The Botany & Microbiology Behind the Production of Ethanol

Why is Irish Whiskey triple-distilled? What does “triple-distilled” mean? Why is beer’s alcoholic content less than gin’s? What ingredients determine whether a beer is a stout like Guinness or a lager like Harp? Is biofuel ethanol and alcohol for human consumption produced by the same method? How does alcohol affect the body, can it affect races differently? You will find the answers to these questions through studying the cellular processes and species (plants, yeast and even insects!) behind ethanol production and by visiting internationally famous breweries, distilleries and meaderies such as Guinness, Jameson’s and Beefeater’s!

Enhancing Leadership & Communication Effectiveness in the British Isles: Interviewing, Public Address, Ethical Persuasion & Conflict Resolution

Join students from other CCSA universities to enhance your employment marketability. Examine concepts of leadership and organizational communication through interviewing, public address, persuasion and team communication while interacting with the British Isles’ populations. Compare and contrast the American and British media and debate techniques as you visit the British Broadcasting Corporation and Speaker’s Corner. Improve your presentation and analytical skills while visiting such organizations as the People’s College Debating Society in Dublin…and more!
Prerequisite: introductory speech course and/or an introductory course involving some basic communication concepts or consent of instructor

Studying Comparative Care Systems: “For the Health of It”

Health care is high when setting priorities in life. So, it is important to know about these services that are important to most people. What do people in England, Ireland and the United States all have in common? At some point everyone should see a health care professional. In an effort to acquaint learners with similarities and differences among the three countries’ systems, lectures, site visits and research will help shape critical thinking and discussion on the following questions: How do I gain access to the health care systems? Is the quality of services provided by practitioners measured, and if so, how? Does one move within a systematic referral system to ensure continuity of care, and is there freedom of choice for desired services? Who pays for health care, i.e., how are programs and services funded? How is health care policy established for program initiation and implementation?

THEATRE

The Contemporary British & Irish Theatre Experience

From the ancient influence of the Romans and the Celts, to the contemporary flair of London’s West End theatres and Dublin’s quaint cityscape, nowhere else on Earth can one find such a fascinating theatrical experience mixed with the old and the new. Study theatre in these two great cities as you follow in the footsteps of William Shakespeare, Lawrence Olivier, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Andrew Lloyd Weber and too many others to mention here. Possible visits to other historical sites such as Stonehenge, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Bath and Warwick Castle make this study abroad experience one to remember for a lifetime.
