PROGRAM OVERVIEW

At the southern-most tip of the world, experience a country which will turn your preconceptions upside down. Join the CCSA South Africa Summer Program and escape the heat of our summer in a place where winter comes in June, where gold and diamonds can’t match the richness of the native culture and natural beauty, where African, European and Indian peoples after much strife are shaping a unique nation and culture which plays host today to many world events, including most recently the World Cup.

By combining this intensive study abroad experience with course-specific directed study activities preceding and/or following the travel portion of the program, students may earn three semester hours of college credit.

Please carefully read Program Details for additional information pertinent to all CCSA programs.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

The following is a description of the course of study offered for this CCSA program. Applicants may register for courses offered by professors from any member institution. Students are encouraged to e-mail faculty to learn more about the classes.

ENGLISH/LITERATURE

Literature & Sport: Reading & Writing World Soccer

The “global game” deserves a global stage, and this course delivers. One year after South Africa’s hosting the 2010 World Cup tournament, our course commemorates “football’s” planetary importance by “Reading and Writing World Soccer.” After an interdisciplinary survey of the sport’s scholarship, we turn our attention to soccer’s various literary forms: poems, sketches and fables, as well as stories, player biographies and experimental prose. Out in the “field,” we will explore soccer’s diverse cultural meanings in metropolitan Johannesburg and Cape Town. Students will cap their travels in a formal football journal, in which they reflect on the significance of their experiences. Prerequisite: one semester composition required; one prior literature course preferred

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupation in Context

The need to educate people to be involved with a global knowledge-based society, while maintaining appreciation and respect for difference, has never been stronger. Many of the western models of occupational therapy practice adopted by South African educators and practitioners may not have relevance, given the unique cultural context of their people. Ubuntu, an African philosophy that focuses on people’s allegiances and relations with each other, is in contrast to western philosophies that often place greater emphasis on autonomy. Through readings, lectures, field trips and interactions with local people, we will explore how occupational therapy is defined and practiced in South Africa.
