PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Having appropriated the name American all to ourselves, residents of the United States have been slow to explore the excitement, grandeur and diversity of Canada, our neighbor to the north. Join the CCSA Canada Program based in Vancouver, site of the most recent Winter Olympics, and gateway to both the Pacific Rim and to the rich biological and Native American cultural diversity of what might be called the Pacific North-Northwest. Join us in experiencing this magnificent harbor city and its surroundings, which boast one of the only true temperate rainforests on earth, an Olympic village built with sustainability as one of its key features, and an island whose gardens out-English the English.

By combining this intensive study abroad experience with course-specific directed study activities preceding and/or following the travel portion of the program, students may earn three semester hours of college credit.

Please carefully read Program Details for additional information pertinent to all CCSA programs.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

Participants in the Canada Program reside in local hotels and dormitories as well as budget accommodations, if appropriate. Accommodations are based primarily on double occupancy with occasional use of multi-bedded rooms; single rooms may be available at an additional price. Daily breakfasts and some additional meals are included in the program price.

PROGRAM COSTS

For those making their own flight arrangements, the price of the Canada program is $2495. This includes internal transportation between program sites, accommodations, daily breakfast, program excursions, health insurance, and some additional meals. Please note in making transportation arrangements: program orientation and activities will begin in Vancouver on July 12th. Participants arranging their own transportation must contact the CCSA Central Office before initiating travel arrangements and must file a copy of their flight itinerary with the office after reservations have been made. Please note that airport transfers to and from the accommodation site are provided ONLY to those participants for whom CCSA has arranged air travel.

For those traveling on a flight arranged by CCSA, the price of the Canada Program is $2995. This includes round-trip transportation from designated cities, airport transfers, internal travel between program sites, accommodations, daily breakfast, program excursions, health insurance and some additional meals.

Most meals, other than breakfast, are at the participant’s own expense. A minimum of $400 should be budgeted for meals, additional transportation, entrance fees and departure tax (if applicable). Participants should also budget additional funds for personal expenses such as souvenirs and independent travel, based upon their individual spending habits.

Tuition is not included in the program costs detailed above. Please refer to Registration/Tuition & Fees for additional information. All prices are subject to change in the event of unanticipated increases in airfares, monetary exchange rates or other changes in program costs. In some cases, program items may be deleted in lieu of a price increase.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Urban Sustainability as Local Public Policy

Vancouver is not only a West Coast magnet for economic development and international trade but a world class city moving toward “urban sustainability.” Here we take the theoretical foundations of sustainability out into the “built” environment of the city and beyond, where we will visit such sites as Bamberton, the “greenest city never built”, the “eco-village” at Whistler-Blackcomb Mountain, and Simon Fraser University. We may meet a Sustainability expert, and perhaps even see a sustainability “implant” first hand: The 2010 Olympic Village at Southeast False Creek.
