COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The following is a description of the course of study offered for this CCSA program. Applicants may register for courses offered by professors from any member institution. Students are encouraged to e-mail faculty to learn more about the classes.COMMUNICATION
A Multicultural Look into Interpersonal Relationships
So you’ve seen the movies, “Braveheart,” ”Rob Roy,” and the “Harry Potter” series and have become fascinated and intrigued with learning more about the people of Great Britain. A visit to this “enchanted” world will give you a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to examine the culture and people of England, Scotland and Wales while developing effective “people skills” through the study of interpersonal communication. Topics to be explored will include self-concept, perception, emotions, language, nonverbal cues, relational dynamics, listening and conflict resolution. The development of interpersonal relationships through interaction with individuals from diverse populations is imperative to personal and professional success in today’s multicultural world. Students will observe a variety of communication practices between three different sections of Great Britain as well as between people in the major cities and in the rural areas. Field trips, on-site interactive group projects, along with reflective journals will be required. The course will culminate with a final research paper concentrating on one aspect of human interaction in both domestic and international contexts.

HISTORY
The History of the Celts in Britain
The history of the island of Britain is a history of conquest and colonization. The earliest known inhabitants of the island, the Celtic-speaking Britons, were conquered first by the Romans and later by the English. Despite this history of conquest, aspects of British culture survived in the modern regions of Wales and Scotland, where the Welsh and the Scots are now seeking to separate themselves politically from England. In this course we will examine this history of conquest, colonization and devolution in the Celtic-speaking areas of Britain by traveling to various sites associated with each period in British history. Prerequisite: Western Civilization I
