PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Tropical rainforests provide unique opportunities and challenges for both medical research and health care delivery. While the biodiversity of the rainforest is constantly yielding new discoveries of great value to pharmaceutical science in particular, such settings, far from modern cities and rich in indigenous culture, also demand new ways of scientific thinking and practice in health science. Belize provides the perfect laboratory through which students interested in Pharmacy, Health Care, and work with indigenous communities can combine research with experience.

Hosted by the Global Awareness Institute at their Maya Center for Natural Medicine field station in the midst of a rainforest reserve near Spanish Lookout, Cayo, Belize, the program combines seminars and field study of medicinal plants and cultures of Belize. During the two-week program, students will be completely immersed in the life and culture of subtropical Belize while attending classes and laboratory sessions in ethnobotany, pharmacognosy, and traditional healing with leading local and international experts.

Note that enrollment for this program is limited to 15 - 17 students maximum.

Please carefully read Program Details for additional information pertinent to all CCSA programs.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

During the two week program, students reside at the GAI Maya Center in field station conditions which require a substantial amount of stamina and willingness to live without the amenities students take for granted in the U.S. While more detailed information will be shared closer to time of departure, participants need to be prepared to reside in a common dormitory, providing their own sleeping bag (required) and air mattress (strongly suggested). While on the reserve all meals will be provided. The reward for any sacrifices of comforts students make is immense and life-changing.

PROGRAM COSTS

The price of the Belize Program is $4595. This includes round-trip transportation from designated cities, internal air transportation, airport transfers, accommodations, daily breakfast, program excursions, health insurance, and some additional meals.

Most meals, other than breakfast, are at the participant’s own expense. A minimum of $400 should be budgeted for meals, additional transportation, entrance fees and departure tax (if applicable). Participants should also budget additional funds for vaccinations, medications, and personal expenses such as souvenirs and independent travel, based upon individual spending habits.

Tuition is not included in the program costs detailed above. Please refer to Registration/Tuition & Fees for additional information.

All prices are subject to change in the event of unanticipated increases in airfares, monetary exchange rates or other changes in program costs. In some cases, program items may be deleted in lieu of a price increase.

PHARMACY/HEALTH SCIENCE

Medicinal Plants and Culture in Central American Rainforest

In this “hands on” study in the rain forest of Belize, students will meet botanists, taxonomists, shamans and farmers, and visit local university and health care facilities while living in an old-growth rain forest reserve. Classroom study and discussion will focus on pharmacology, pharmacognosy, ethnobotany of selective indigenous plants, and renewed interest in traditional medicine. Classroom interaction will be supplemented with various cultural events and field trips to help develop awareness of and sensitivity to cultural diversity.
