Program Overview

The twelve-week CCSA London Summer Internship/Study Program combines a eight-week unpaid, for-credit internship with the four-week London Summer Program on which students may enroll for one or two 3-hour academic courses.

The program begins with an intensive internship experience, a supervised unpaid work placement that allows students to gain experience in business, industry, social or governmental agencies, theatres, museums or other work environments in a different work culture. The first of the 8 weeks is devoted to orientation, cultural activities and interviews.  Students then spend 7 weeks at the internship placement site working full-time Monday through Thursday.  EUSA (CCSA’s London representative) has developed a program that includes a structured, intensive orientation week; weekly cultural experiences; and study time. Tied to the internship itself is also a directed course of study which culminates in a 3000-word research paper.  Students must be enrolled for academic credit for the internship as arranged according to their school’s requirements for internship credit.

Following the 8-week internship program, students participate in CCSA’s London Summer Program, beginning on Friday, July 8, enrolling in one or two academic courses. Please visit the London Summer page for detailed program information and course listings.

Please carefully read Program Details for additional information pertinent to all CCSA programs.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The application requirements for the Internship Program are as follows:

1.            Minimum age of 18 at time of application.

2.            Sophomore standing or above at time of application.

3.            A minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall (unofficial college transcript required) at time of application.

4.            The program is open only to students seeking academic credit for the internship.

Following receipt of the CCSA application form, additional documents will be requested. Detailed instructions pertaining to these items will be shared in an acknowledgment email. Prompt return of these documents is vital.

Locating Internship Sites

EUSA (CCSA’s London representative), attempts to tailor each internship to meet the needs of the student (based upon his/her academic background, previous work experience and relevant interests), to the best of its ability and in light of the current circumstances within the intern’s requested field(s). Once the application has been received and approved by CCSA, students will be contacted by EUSA for a pre-placement telephone meeting. After this has taken place, companies/organizations that the EUSA placement manager feels will match the student’s interests and skills will be contacted and given the candidate’s resume.

While every attempt is made to secure a placement within an area specified by the student, there is no guarantee that a placement will be found that exactly meets expectations. The student may be placed in an alternate, but related area.

Orientation/Interview

The first week in London is devoted to orientation/familiarization activities, to include walking tours, an orientation session, cultural visits, welcome reception, etc. Subjects covered during the orientation session include interview techniques, professionalism, culture of the workforce, dress code, health, safety and expectations. An interview with each student’s respective internship supervisor will be scheduled to take place during this week.

Supervision

Throughout the internship, students have the opportunity to discuss any area of their internship with the EUSA placement manager. Students are also encouraged to arrange an appointment to discuss with the EUSA placement manager any program-related issues.

During the course of the program, each student must meet with a EUSA-appointed academic advisor on four occasions, three times during the internship placement and one time during the London Summer Program to discuss connections between their classroom-based learning, independent research project, and the practical experience gained during their placement.

Each student completes an online midterm and final review to assess his/her program.  At the end of the program, each internship supervisor completes an evaluation critiquing the intern’s performance.

PASSPORT & STUDENT VISA

The UK government requires that non-EU citizens acquire student visas for participation in academic internship programs. Additional information will be provided to you once your application is approved. The visa-processing fee (approximately $200) is not included in the CCSA program price. Please note that immigration information is continually changing, and EUSA and/or CCSA will be sharing up to date information as it becomes available.
